The search is still on for words that best describes this flawless lyrical soldier from the heart of the streets. He is one who has carved a niche for himself without no special privileges but raw talents and sheer determination. Amidst the countless challenges talented youths face in Nigeria, this dude has successfully established himself as one of Nigeria’s most promising Roots, Rhythm n’ Redemption & Dancehall artiste. His name is CHAKKA DA’ SOULJAH a.k.a ‘ICHIBAN’ (Number One).
Real name Sampson Okonye, Chakka is from Delta State, born in Ogun State and raised in Lagos. Despite the drama surrounding his growing up, the determined young man utilized a large percentage of his ability, powered by discipline and self-culture. Some say a MENTOR is somewhat a factor in shaping the lives of gifted people but according to CHAKKA, “TORMENTORS had a better part of me but this also became my driving force”
Starting as a Hip Hop artiste, CHAKKA DA’ SOULJAH dropped his debut single “Monkeys n’ Baboons” in the year 2000 and it was a certified hit. He has featured in several minor and major concerts, campus gigs and so on. He also rendered one of the sound tracks for the movie CAMPUS QUEEN, Produced by Tunde Kelani in 2003. He has also featured on series of mix tapes and collaborations with top-notch acts like SOUND SULTAN, BLACK TRIBES, BABA DEE, GODFATHER and many more.
For Chakka, the hustle was insidious indeed but instead of letting the game drown him, he went underground to reinforce for another day. In 2008, he bounced back in a different form; he switched from Rap to Root Reggae/Dancehall, without losing his ideals and street cred’. Some pundits predicted doom ‘cos of this change, but the release of his debut album – ‘ICHIBAN’ proved them wrong. This album earned him a nomination for HIPHOP WORLD AWARDS 2009 in the BEST DANCEHALL/REGGAE ALBUM OF THE YEAR CATEGORY.
The resilient Souljah is presently signed to OFFISHAL RECORDS who will be releasing his sophomore album titled ‘TOP SHOTTA’ and these singles are snippets of other great songs to come off the album. Enjoy it with love.\"Faya Jo\"
