MTV Base and the MTV Staying Alive Foundation are set to tap into the creativity of Naija’s flourishing entertainment industry in the creation and realization of ‘Shuga’, the globally acclaimed and award winning TV drama about youth sex and relationships.
The third series of Shuga will be shot and produced in Nigeria for the first time, utilising a predominantly Nigerian cast and crew. Ace Nigerian film maker Biyi Bandele, director of the highly anticipated film of Chimamanda Adichie’s ‘Half Of A Yellow Sun’, will direct the 8-part series. Crafting the screenplay for Shuga is a team of Nigerian writers led by award-winning scriptwriter – Kemi Adesoye of Tinsel, Figurine fame. She was picked by Bandele after he saw her screenplay for ‘Phone Swap’.
Fusing sexual health messaging with gripping story lines, Shuga is part of a powerful 360-degree mass media campaign designed to raise awareness about HIV prevention and teen pregnancy in Nigeria and Africa.
Set in Lagos, Shuga 3 will star Nigerian actor and artiste – Ikubese Emmanuel Ifeanyichukwu aka 9con, who will reprise his role as smooth-talking bad boy – Femi from Shuga 2. Kenyan actor, singer and OAP, Nick Mutuma. We’ll also see Nigeria’s finest – Banky W and Wizkid. Other cast members will be revealed later.
Shuga is produced by MTV Base and the MTV Staying Alive Foundation in collaboration with NACA, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and UNFPA. Other partners include Girl Hub and Department of international development which helps transform the lives of adolescent girls living in poverty by engaging the girls themselves as active participants.
